The rise of so-called “Artificial Intelligence” has been met with wonder and fear. Some imagine a future where AI rivals or even surpasses human intellect. Others warn of an impending existential crisis. Before we get carried away with science fiction, though, we need to define what AI actually is and, more importantly, what it is not.
At its core, what we call "AI" today is not Artificial Intelligence—at least not in the way most people think. It is an advanced system of pattern recognition and data analysis, a machine that processes vast amounts of information and produces output based on statistical probabilities. A.I. learning algorithms are not a mind, nor can they become one.
